Hitler Inspects French Frontier; A Dramatic Action
(Received noon). , J LONDON, August 29. TTERR HITLER ARRIVED UNEXPECTEDLY AT THE FRENCH FRONTIER AT KEHL, OPPOSITE STRASBOURG, TO WHICH ALL TRAFFIC IS SUSPENDED. THE FRONTIER IS CLOSED. The Fuehrer, accompanied by eight generals, inspected the fortifica- ■}( tions at the bridgehead, .and left in the direction of Offenburg. Storm Troopers were mobilised to maintain order. The “Daily Telegraph” says Herr Hitler’s all-day tour extended over 90 miles along the banks of the Rhino and neighbourhood, where important i fortifications are being constructed. ,
The inspection was marked by extraordinary secrecy. All telephone calls from London were intercepted at the Germans’ end.
Manoeuvres on a large scale, tho ugh incomparable with Germany’s current operations, will begin tomorrow on the Swiss frontier, states a Paris message. Troops will experiment in mobility by employing IpO Paris street omnibuses and civilian organisations for the purpose of studying the utility of buses in view of the possibilities of evacuating Paris of civilians in wartifne.
