Unsuitable For Flying-Boat Base
ISpecial k> ‘ northern Advocate."] WELLINGTON. This Day.
The expert committee appointed to consider the suitability of Wellington harbour for marine aircraft has reported to the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, that during the inaugural stages of the new flying boat service it would be unwise at present, to attempt the regular operation of flying boats from Wellington harbour. In its investigation, the committee considered mooring sites. »tho discharge and embarkation of . passengers, mails and freight and (he landing .and taking off conditions. The most suitable site. Evans Bay, is subject to violent changes in wind, rec-
ords showing that there are 82 days in the year when the velocity would constitute a risk, while there is liability of damage to aircraft during tendering operations, and to the wing tips of floats during the take-off. Possible cancellations in flights would occur on 50- days in the year. The committee is of the opinion that, given the assistance of normal aeradio aids, aircraft could approach, or. apart from wind and sea condition. depart from the Wellington area with a satisfactory degree of regularity throughout the year.
