Fighting On The Yangtse
(Received 2.30 p.m.; LONDON, August 10. The Hongkong correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says it is officially claimed in Canton that the Chinese offensive on the north bank of the Yangtse is gaining ground. The Japanese have suffered heavy losses at Hwangmei, where they arc facing extermination owing to the Chinese intercepting reinforcements. Moreover, floods are preventing the Japanese from bringing up transport and heavy equipment, with the result that the Chinese are equal to them in that respect, and numerically superior. It is confirmed that the Japanese are withdrawing to the north, presumably owing to the Russo-Jap. situation.
Peter Roberts, an English aviator, says that 1000 Russian pilots and aircraftsmen at Hankow, equipped with 50 bombers and 100 pursuit planes, are raiding Japanese vessels 'on the Yangtse, and sinking river craft, motor boats and an occasional destroyer.
