All Blacks Overwhelm Canberra
CANBERRA, August 10. Hopelessly outclassed in every branch of the game, the Federal capital. territory went down by 57 points to . five by. .the All Blacks today before one, of. the biggest. crowds ever seen at Manuka Oval, From the moment when the All Blacks opened their account with a fine try by Wright 10 minutes after the commencement, the Territory team was unable to stand the steady attack. The ’ New Zealanders’ scoring was unending, with a succession of tries right up. to the final whistle, when Dick went over. The All Blacks led at half-time by 24 points to 5. The visitors gave a wonderful display of, clean fast football and superb combination, which was an object lesson. The local side was unable to make headway against a superior and heavier pack, and lost many chances of scoring by fumbling passes. Its only try was scored in the first half by Hassett. • ' ' Saxton played splendidly, securing the hall from the scrums, and getting the backs moving.. He intrigued the crowd with his famous diving pass. In the closing stages a knee injury forced him from the field, and he was replaced by George. It is hoped that the injury will not prevent his participation in the next test. The; Territory vice-captain, R. B, DawsOn,' was .also hurt at the same time, but he returned to the field. Dawson, who is a New Zealander, now a Royal Military College cadet, was the outstanding Territory player. He started many fine movements, which failed to materialise. He was splendid on defence and resourceful on attack.
Griffiths was brilliant on defence, saving many difficult situations. The match was played in glorious weather, on a ground a trifle sticky after recent rains.
The All Blacks team was as follows: Full-back, Griffiths; threequarters, Dick,. Wesney, Wright; fiveeighths, Hooper, Tindall; half-back, Saxton;., forwards, Williams, Carson, Wynyard, McKenzie (captain), Parkhiil, Dalton, Lambourn, Jackson,
Tries for New Zealand were scored by Wright (3), Wesney (3), Wynyard (2), Hooper, Lambourn, Dick, McKenzie and Williams. Tindall potted a goal.
