Midnight Dance On Sunday
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “I think thex-e should be some indication that the practice of holding midnight dances on Sunday does not meet with universal approval,” said Mr. G. Whitelaw, at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery yesterday. He objected to the practice of beginning a dance at midnight on Sunday, and said he thought the Presbytex’y should write to the Scottish Society, expressing surprise and regret that such proceedings were countenanced. He quoted an advertisement for a dance held at midnight last Sunday in the society’s hall. “I don’t see how we can object,” said the Rev. Theo Paterson. “We have had 24 hours of Sunday, and it is Monday morning.” Members remarked that such dances had been held before, and it was pointed out that people going to them encroached on the Sabbath. It was also stated that the Scottish Society sublet the hall.
After a short discussion, in which the opinion was expressed that as the dance actually took place on Monday morning, the Presbytery could not very well object, the motion was lost on the voices.
