Tahiti Glamour
Cecil Lewis was baptised into special fame by Bernard Shaw’s high praise of his "Sagitarius Rising.” His latest book “The Trumpet is Mine” (Constable, 8/6) is a story of Tahiti. The author is in rapturous love with Tahiti.
His book is a piece of “escape literature.” finding in Tahiti ,a glamourous escape from the crazy feverish world of big cities and big business. If Tahiti is all he found it, there should be a rush across the seven seas to enjoy its romance and wild beauty. For those who must see it through printed pages or not at all Mr Lewis provides a vivid panorama of native life and island scenes. He also discusses native problems, including sex relationships, with frankness. One has a feeling that a more scientific book should be read to balance up this author’s enthusiasms if a safe judgment Is to be cultivated. As romance—quite good.
