Lorry Goes Through Bridge. On Tuesday, Mr L. Parlane had a lucky escape from injury when a heavy lorry he was driving fell through Hook’s bridge over the Waimamaku River, Hokianga. The lorry fell about 16 feet into the riverbed and came to rest on its rear end, with its front wheels leaning against a pier. The driver was unhurt.

Winter Weather Again. After a few days’ grace at the weekend, Whangarei weather has returned to winter again in the past 48 hours. Light rain fell on Monday night, and yesterday was cold, with frequent rain squalls. There was heavy rain last night, followed by light showers today, while a cold southerly wind has made conditions far from pleasant. The rainfall in Whangarei for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day was .75 inch, while yesterday morning the recording for the previous 24 hours was about .30 inch.

Farm Instructors’ Zones. Farm instructors’ territories in North Auckland have been re-zoned since the Government assumed control of this instruction and the new territories were zoned as from August 1. Mr H. Olds, who previously covered the Northern 'Wairoa territory loses the Pukehuia, Omana, Kirikopuni and Tangiteroria districts to Mr Anderson, instructor at Whangarei. Mr Olds will now take over from Mr H. B. Wallace, instructor at Maungaturoto, portion of Ruawai district below Te Kopuru, Rehia and Tokatoka.

Hukerenui’s Wild Weather. Although limited to an_hour last night. torrential rain brought up a high flood in the Hukerenui-Whaka-para district. Houses rocked with the force of the gale, and a number of macrocarpa trees were blown down. Flood waters were rising at Hukerenui, but the road was always passable.

Tikipunga Orphanage. At its meeting last night the Star of Whangarei Lodge, No. 89, 1.0.0. F., voted £2 2/- as a gesture of appreciation of the effort to establish the Tikipunga Orphanage.

Young Businessmen. An open invitation for members to attend the September quarterly meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce was received at the meeting of the Whangarei Young Businessmen’s Club last evening. Messrs. C. Weymouth, B. Crawford and J; Crosby were appointed to confer with officers of the chamber to make the necessary arrangements for the meeting. » • » • Municipal Band Accounts. The balance sheet of the Whangarei Municipal Band, as presented to the annual meeting last night, revealed a bank overdraft of £127/3/5, "arid an excess of assets over liabilities of £426 11/-. Among the assets were shown: Borough Council subsidy, £37/10/-; instruments, £221/6/-; uniforms, £lO9 8/-; junior band uniforms, £76/10/-; music, £27/5/-; furniture, £2O/5/-; junior band instruments, £67/14/-; cash in hand, 18/5. ♦ * * • Preparing Rugby Park. With a view to disposing of the surface water on Rugby Park, and to prepare it for rolling so that it will be' fit for hockey for the Indians’ visit, the park was well harrowed On Mbnday. Again this Saturday the majority of matches under the Whangarei Rugby Union will be played at Kensington Park, to enable the Hockey Association to prepare Rugby Park for the visitors. > * • • W.C.T.U. Organiser, Miss E. Appleby, the new organiser to the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, arrives in Whangarei on Friday, in the course of a tour of the North, and will be the guest of the Rev. and Mrs H. J. Tozer during the week-end 1 . As Miss Appleby is arriving a day later than expected, a special meeting of the local branch of the W.C.T.U., to have been held tomorrow in connection with her visit, will not take place.
