School Sports At Onerahi
On Friday of last week, school children from Portland and Otaika journeyed to Onerahi to participate with the local school children in basketball and football matches. The warm, sunny weather was very favourable, and good playing resulted. When the games were over, all partook of afterneon tea, provided by a ladies’ commitee. Portland was successful in the basketball matches, both in senior and bantam divisions, while Onerahi won the football. These teams will be the representatives from this group for the competition matches to be held on Friday. August 12, at Kensington. The losing teams will also play then, but only in friendly matches. Two of the Onerahi boys. Alan Whitelaw and John Cartwright, were selected to play in the Whangarei Primary School representative team. The results of the matches were:— Basketball.—Senior girls: Portland A beat Onerahi B, 14—0; Otaika beat Onerahi A. 3—l; Portland A beat Portland** fe, 2—l; Portland A beat Otaika. 6—l. Bantams: Portland beat Onerahi. 9—o: Portland beat Otaika. 2—o.
Football. —Senior: Portland A beat Onerahi B, 3—o: Onerahi A beat Portland B, 11—0; Onerahi A beat Portland A. 6—o. Bantams: Portland beat Onerahi B. 3—o; Onerahi A beat Portland, 3—o.
