Fierce Fighting On Yangtse

(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 30,

The Japanese yesterday encountered the main body of the Chinese on the south bank of the Yangtse, when severe fighting ensued, says a message from Hankow. The Chinese claim to have hit several Japanese warships and to have sunk one.

A major engagement developed today, involving the main body of the Chinese between Hankow and Kiukiang. The Japanese captured Tahu, but the Chinese claim that they are entrenched in the hills and are barring further progress. The Japanese are hurrying reinforcements forward to check successful Chinese counter-attacks, and have captured five strong points on the Kiukiang-Pengtseh front. Foreigners of all nationalities have enrolled under the command of a Briton to police Hankow and protect the foreign concession.

It is reliably stated that Marshal Chiang Kai-shek has avoided a rupture with'the Communists by agreeing to defend Hankow as long as possible, instead of withdrawing his central troops at the first appearance of the Japanese.
