Search Preparations
i (Received 2 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 29. According to subsequent advices i from Manila, Pan-American Airways' cffici'als said the clipper carried enough fuel to remain aloft until 10 p.m., Manila time. The night was j dark and cloudy. Ground crews were i ordered to remain at their posts. It j was said to be difficult to land, r Officials of the army, navy and PanAmerican Airways conferred for a long time, le'ading to the belief that j they were discussing preparations for ! a search, but in such events planes were not expected to be able to take | off before dawn. The navy later announced the fuelling of the destroyers Stewart, Edsiall and Paul Jones, which would depart about midnight via San Bernardino Straits, to search an are'a of Samar, Army officials said several planes would take off at dawn. Authorities were convinced that the plane must have been forced down due to fuel exhaustion. Naval authorities at Washington stated that the search will be under the control of Admiral Harry Yarnell. ■ They 'also declared that there were facilities at Manila for a com- 1 prehensive search, both by sea and! air. j Mr Meigs, Pan-American (official, Radioed the War Department at 12.30, Manila time, that they had found no trace of the Clipper. Meantime, Manila Pan-American officials stated that the machine was sufficiently' provided with food and water to last several days. Also, she was fully supplied with emergency foods. Officials estimated that combined stores were sufficient to last 'all aboard for 15 days. Officials at Manila hold out hope of rescue being possible because the Clipper was capable of alighting. even ’ in a heavy sea and remaining afloat. J A Manila message says that there was no further news at 5:15 a.m. of the Hawaii Clipper. Five army bombers took off for a six-hour search. • A message from San Francisco says that Pan-American Airways have announced that the China Clipper, with no bookings cancelled, will depart on schedule from Almeda today, despite the disappearance of the Hawaii Clipper.
