Short-Lived Revolt in Crete: Quickly Crushed

(Received 11.30 a.m.) ATHENS, July 29. JPEVOLT HAS BROKEN OUT IN CRETE. THE GOVERNMENT HURRIEDLY SENT STRONG ARMED FORCES TO SUPPRESS IT. FOUR HUNDRED ARMED REBELS SEIZED THE CAPITAL OVERNIGHT. General Metaxas, Prime Minister and Dictator, issued a proclamation that the revolt had been confined to Crete, and exhorting the rest of Greece to keep calm. Leaders of the revolt include Mitsotakis. ex-Minister cf National Economy, also ox-Mayor of Canea. The rebels so far have met little resistance, but the dictatorship claims to have sent sufficient planes and troops to quell the outbreak in a day or two. Latest advices state that the revolt was completely crushed. The rebels either fled to the hillside or surrendered. All is now quiet.■
