Upsets In English County Cricket
(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 30. The most remarkable feature of the series of county cricket matches which commenced on Wednesday was the defeat of Surrey by Worcestershire by 10 wickets at the Oval. At the beginning of the week Surrey, at the home ground, had a great victory by 262 runs over Yorkshire, the 1937 champion side which has'now assumed the lead this season. R. Howarth, Worcester’s slow bowler scored a century. This was the second occasion in the week when a bowler had hit a 100, W. Voce on Tuesday having knocked up 111 for Notts against Derbyshire. Fine Bowling Performance. Lancashire, again one of the leading teams during the past three months, lost to Essex on the first innings. The game was played at Old Trafford. The outstanding individual effort was by the ex-New South Wales bowler, J. Walsh. Playing for Sir Julian Cahn’s eleven against Glamorgan at Newport, he took all but one of the Welsh wickets in the first innings for 101 runs. Yet he was on the losing side.
