Snow in South Island
I f Special to “Northern Advocate”! i CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Falls of snow during the night (Spread a white mantle over the city | and brought the first real winter con- ■ cations of the year. | There were a few light falls during ; the day, but bright sunshine had. ! melted most of the snow in the city : by late afternoon. The snow has caused i disorganisation of traffic on most main ! j routes, and will give trouble to farm- : ers. The lines of the Post and Tele- } i graph Department and of the power i \ j authorities have also suffered some I damage, but otherwise the effect of the storm has not been serious. A message from Greymouth states that for the first time in seven years snow fell in Greymouth yesterday, when weather suggestive of a blizzard was experienced right down to the sea coast. At Greymouth at 9 o’clock yesterday morning the thermometer reading was 39 degrees, and shortly after, driven by an easterly wind of gale force, snow which had been falling inland since early in the morning | reached the sea coast, i Snow commenced to fall in the Reefj ton district early yesterday morning, ! and there has been a heavy fall. Like i the Otira route, the Lewis Pass--1 Hammer Road is impassable owing to : snow. j Ashburton county was also mantled | in snow as a i-esult of the fall which set iin at about 11 o’clock on Thursday | night. The greatest depth was 12 J inches at Staveley, under the foothills. | Occasional light falls continued inland | from Ashburton yesterday, j Camaru experienced its first snow ! for two years yesterday. In the town ; only a light fall was experienced, but ; six inches fell at Ngapara. No stock j losses have yet been reported. Snow and sleet fell yesterday in j Otago. Between Dunedin and Gore, two inches of snow is on the road, while about four inches covers the Milton-Roxburgh road, the surfaces being frozen.
