Miss Bennett to Attend World Conference

On Wednesday of this week, a very pleasant evening was held at the residence of Mrs J. W. Court. The occasion was the first meeting of a Maori girls’ choir. Although numbers are not great as yet, an enthusiastic practice was held, and several action and part songs learnt. The meetings will probably be fortnightly, sometimes in the clubrooms and sometimes in private homes. Citizens, held their usual Friday meeting with games during the early part of the programme, a rehearsal of plays and a handcraft period, during which woolly toys were made. Gym. classes are held on Wednesday evenings, and continue to be very popular. During Miss Bennett’s absence, Miss Pegg, of Christchurch will be leader.

Meeting in Canada. At the next meeting of the World’s Council, which is being held at Elgin House, Lake Joseph, Ontario, Canada, there will be four delegates from New Zealand. Mrs Rudd, president of the Auckland Y.W.C.A., is the council member from New Zealand; and with her will go Mrs P. Davie, of New Plymouth, as a delegate. Thanks to the generosity firstly of the world’s office in Geneva, and also of the National Executive of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand, two secretaries have been granted leave of absence to enable them to attend. Miss Bridgman, general secretary, of Wellington, and Miss Bennett, of' Whangarei, are the two chosen. They expect to be absent a little over two months, and will probably attend a regional conference in East Canada before returning to New Zealand. Representatives from all over the world will be present at this meeting, which usually takes place once every three years. Mothers and Daughters’ Banquet. A very cheery little function was the mothers and daughters’ banquet, held at the Y.W.C.A. rooms on Tuesday evening. Mothers and daughters rolled up in good numbers. Those who had no daughters adopted someone else’s, as did the daughters whose mothers were not available. The tables were masterpieces of originality and artistry, the result of competition between clubs. After toasts had been proposed and honoured by representative circles, members and guests, Miss

Bennett, the popular secretary, announced her impending visit to Canada. Although there will be some regrets at losing her services for even a short time, there will be much rejoicing at the honour of having Miss Bennett chosen, and confidence that she will be a worthy representative. On behalf of the association. Mrs Jones handed Miss Bennett a cheque with which to purchase a memento of her trip. Miss Bennett, who was accorded musical honours, returned thanks.
