Whangarei’s Traffics Accidents
Fifteen persons were injured in traffic accidents in the Whangax*ei borough in the year ending March 31 last, five of these being injured seriously. Six pedestrians were injured during the year—a very high percentage. Three of these were childrcrf. Motor cyclists were involved in four of the fifteen accidents. Failure to yield the right of way was the cause of at least one-third of the accidents. Careless driving was responsible for two collisions, pedestrian carelessness for three, and excessive speed, failure to signal, and dazzling lights were responsible for the balance. Whangarei’s record compares favourably with boroughs of a similar population. In Oamaru during the same period the same number of persons were injured, but two subsequently died. Rotorua, with substantial holiday traffic, had 22 accidents involving personal injuries, one of these being fatal. Accidents in which those concerned escaped injury are not included in these figures.
