Is Franco Weakening? Two Reports
(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, July 28. The Government forces’ advance toward Gandesa continues. General Franco’s troops so far have made only a weak resistance. The operations were so well-timed that General Franco’s offensive against Valencia has died down, while his forces are being diverted to meet the threat of his flank. Aircraft also have been withdrawn from the TeruelSagunto road. The weakness of General Franco’s resistance is partly explained by the claim that the civilian population and many of his own troops facilitated the Government forces’ advance. The success has strengthened the Government morale. General Franco’s headquarters do not deny the setback, but claim that their troops are punishing the attackers heavily.
