Refugees’ Problem
[British Official Wireless.! (Received 2.0 p.m.) RUGBY, July 27. The problem of refugees and the Evian meeting were debated in the House of Lords. The Earl of Plymouth, replying for the Government, said they approached the question with the wholehearted desire to assist in its solution, and had warmly welcomed President Roosevelt’s initiative, because, unless there was general cooperation, the refugees problem would become still more difficult. The admission of immigrants into the Dominions was entirely a matter for the Dominion Governments, and, as to the settlement of refugees in East Africa and Northern Rhodesia, time must be allowed for consideraton of what was a complicated problem. He ventured to think that the results of the Evian Conference were very hopeful for the future.
