Staff members of the Whangarei Co-operative Dairy Company met in jolly mood last night at a function in honour of a fellow-employee, Mr J. Humphries, who is taking up an appointment in Auckland. Dancing and items made up a most enjoyable programme, at the conclusion of which Mr Humphries was presented with a handsome bag on behalf of the staff. Mr Humphries suitably replied. The death has occurred at Maruata settlement of Pehi Aweri, paramount chief of the Ngati Hau tribe. Born more than 90 years ago- at Ruapekapeka, during the fierce fighting at the time of the Pakeha invasion, Pehi Aweri had spent all his life in the settlement.. He'was the founder of the Maori church at Tehi and was one of the best known figures in Northland’s Maori history. On Tuesday he was found lying dead a few yards away from his whare in the settlement.
