The Farthest You Can See

When we are enjoying our summer holiday and are visiting the country or seaside, wo realise how much farther we can see there than we can in town. The distance a person can see depends upon three things. First, the keenness of his sight; secondly, the condition of the atmosphere; and thirdly, the place where lie is standing. If we are looking over level country or the sea, and our eyes are sft. above the ground, we can see about three miles. If our eyes are 9ft. up, we see four miles. If they arc 35ft. up, we see eight miles. If they are 30Cft. up. as when wc stand on a hill, vve can see 23 miles: and if we arc 1000 ft. above the sea level or the ground, we can see 42 miles. In America, where the air is much clearer than in England, great distances can be seen from high mountains. Some years ago the Governmcn surveyors were able to see from one mountain to another across a distance of 192 miles. It is a record for human sight on the earth.
