Shearers’ Rates On Sliding Scale
[Per Press Association. - Copyright.] WELLINGTON. This Day. Following a conference between Mr. R. Eddy, representing the New Zealand Workers’ Union. Mr. W. Nicholson. representing the New Zealand Sheep Owners’ Federation, and Mr. J. W. Butcher, Government Statistician, the shearing rates for the 1938-39 season were announced. The rates arc j on a sliding scale in accordance with , wool prices. They are as follows, last i year’s rates being given in parentheses; j Shearers. —Shearing by machine, not less than 2G/6 C34/-) per 100. with rations; shearing lambs, ditto; handshearing. not less than 31 - (30 T) per 100. with rations. In eases where shearers find their rations, an allowance of 4/- a day is to be paid. For shearing stud sheep and hogget rams, rate and a half is to be paid, and for ether rams double ordinary rates are to be paid. Shed hands.—-Prossers, by the week, £4/4/6 (£5/1/-), and by the hour. 2/31 (2/9); all other shed hands, by the week, £3/14/6 (£4/11/-), and by the hour, 2/1A (2/7). Cooks.—For twelve men or under, £4/14/6 (£5/11/-) a week, or 18/3 (£l/1/-) a day. if employed for less than seven days a week. For each additional man to be cooked for, where the number exceeds 18 men, an assistant is to be employed, and where over 28 men are engaged the rate is to be by mutual agreement. A cook’s assistant is to receive £3/19/6 (£ 4/1/4) a week, or 15/6 (17/4) a day, if employed for less than seven days. Except in cases otherwise provided, rations are to be provided as well.
