Who Is Responsible?
Removal of liability from the shoulders of school committees in the event of children being injured in the school buildings or grounds was suggested by'Mr Wiblin (Hukerenui) at yesterdays quarterly meeting of the Whangarei sub-provincial executive of the Farmers' Union. Committee men were responsible for the safety of children in school grounds said Mr. Wiblin. Any accidents occurring while playing with the equipment provided or inside the buildings were the responsibility of the* local school committees. It was not fair, he said, that committee men who gave their time without remuneration should have to shoulder such responsibility. In answer to inquiries from delegates. Mr. Wiblin said he was sure the responsibility lay with the school committees. •* Mr. J. C. McKay was of the opinion that the committees were responsible only when negligence had been proved. He could not recall a single case where a school committee had been held responsible for an accident. The matter is to be investigated by the union.
