Having admitted a charge of obtaining over £6OO from the Pensions Department by false pretences, George Withers was today - sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by Mr Justice Northcroft. His Honour pointed out that although witness had a good record in both the Boer and Great Wars, he had obtained over £6OO by concealing his earnings deliberately over a period of three years. In view of the deliberate nature of the offence ,and the amount involved, as well as the necessity for deterring others from yielding to the same temptation, the sentence would be six months’ imprisonment.
