Rep. Hockey Fixtures. The hockey representative fixtures formerly set down for August 13 will now be played on Saturday, August 6, when Rodney will compete with Whagarei for the Powell Cup. The Rodney ladies’ representatives will play the Whangarei ladies for the Hannam Shield. Both games will be played at Kensington Park. * * * # Give the Young a Chance. Encouragement of younger men to shoulder the responsibilities now held by their elders was urged by the president of the Whangarei Racing Club, Mr R. G. Hosking, at the club’s annual meeting last night. “I think if we older men would only keep our eyes open for younger men anxious to take over responsibility, none of our organisations would fail,” he said. “We are in a country that offers vast opportunities, and if there are people keen to show their enterprise, then I think we should give them the chance of showing us older members what they are worth.” * * <! si: Otamatea Grants. With reference to the report of the last meeting of the Otamatea County Council dealing with the supplementary estimates, the county clerk, Mr E. G. Aickfn, writes as follows: “The remarks reported to have been made by the clerk concerning last year’s grants are incorrect, as no remarks whatever were made by him.”

[ Switchboard Jolts. .. . The high voltage of the electrical storm which swept the North on Tuesday night caused many telephone services to fail for a few hours. At Kohukohu the effects of the lightning were so pronounced that the switchboard attendant, owing to the. terrific crackling in his ears, had to discontinue operations for half an hour near midnight.
