Five Millions For Highways This Year

During the next year a total sum of £5,037,200 is estimated to be spent on main highways throughout the Dominion, according to the P.W.D. Estimates announced to-day for the construction, announced today. For the construction main highways, including £400,000 for elimination of level railway crossings, the total apportionment is £3.310.000. of which Northland's share is £ 175.000. Last year £115,000 was voted for Northland main, highways and £121.869 spent, bringing the total expenditure under this heading in the North to £786,508. It is interesting to note that this latter total is exceeded only by the No. 2 Highway District, (Auckland South), with £1,272,890.
For renewal of highways. £45.000 has been voted to No. 1 District, and for maintenance and repair £ 100,000 has been set aside. In 1937-38 £95.000 was voted for the maintenance of northland highways and £ 105.597 expended. The total current vote under the heading of maintenance is £1,318.000.
