Copyright.] NELSON, This Day. “The Government is strongly of the opinion that it is desirable that more New Zealand tobacco should be manufactured here, and that growers should receive a return which wd! compensate them for their work in improving the quality and quantity," read a statement by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon, D C, Sullivan. to a gathering of tobacco growers, at Motuekn. ‘‘A plan will be formulated for next season providing a reasonable return to growers of average efficiency. The aim is to increase production and consumption of New Zealand leaf to a point where we arc using 100 per cent, locally grown supplies, and where we have a substantial enlargement in the export trade." The' Minister drew attention to the. steady growth of the industry, which next should reach an output of over 2,000,0001 b.
