Professor R. M. Algie, organiser of the Auckland Provincial Freedom League, arrived in Whangarei last night, in the course of a tour of Northland centres. He will return to Auckland on Thursday. While in Whangarei Professor Algie is staying at the Commercial Hotel. Mr. J. H. Winter, who has managed the Kamo Hotel during the absence of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Brydon in Australia, and who previously acted in a relieving capacity at the Whangarei Hotel, left yesterday for a similar position at Wairakei. The following staff changes are announced by the . Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Ltd.—Mr. Charles Martin, branch manager at Newcastle, New South Wales, will retire on superannuation on September 30, in the fiftieth year of service; Mr. W. E. Hancock, manager for Fiji at Suva since March, 1932, will be acting-manager at Newcastle from October 1. Mr. D. A. C. Butler, manager at Apia, will succeed Mr. Hancock as manager for Fiji from August 18. It was learned yesterday that Mr. H. Tai Mitchell, chairman of the Arawa District Trust Board, has been offered the position of judge of the Native Land Court in the Cook Islands Administration with headquarters at Rarotonga for a term of two years. The appointment has been declined by Mr. Mitchell, who, in a telegram to the Assistant Secretary of the Cook Islands Administration, regretted his inability to accept the post for health and other considerations.
