Nazi-Persecuted Jews Come to New Zealand

This Day. •‘Tile stories you have heard about the persecution of Jews in Germany, particularly in cities, are not exaggerated Those cl us who have travelled across the world to New Zealand look forward to kindness ami freedom in.your democratic and beautil u.i country.’’ This statement was made by Dr. E. G. Jacoby, distinguished German legal authority, who. accompanied by his wile, is one of a contingent of 49 German and Austrian Jews who arrived by the Niagara this morning. Seventeen of the parly disembarked at Auckland, while the others are travelling on to Australia. Dr. Jacoby is balf-Jewish, and is married to a German girl, who must suffer exile with her husband. Dr. Jacoby was assistant secretary to the Prussian Ministry of Commerce before 1933. With the rise of. Hitler, he was forced to resign his. Government position and obtained a post in a Jewish bank, after years of unemployment. After four years, ihe law compelled all Jewish banks to be liquidated. He hopes to take up commercial work in New Zealand. “In Germany to-day, Jews are considered good enough only to pay taxes, but not good enough to earn livings and be happy citizens,’’ said Dr. Jacoby.
