Otamatea Fears Neglect In Grants

Fears that the Otamatea County may not fare very well when the grants for the year are issued, were expressed by the chairman, Mr R. Coates, at Wednesday’s meeting of the council. “It is gptting near the time for putting in the supplementary grants,” said Mr Coates, “and I can get no satisfaction from Mr Packwood regarding the estimates. We do not know where we stand. I am going to suggest that you leave it to myself and the staff to watch the position, and if necessary, slip off to Wellington and make direct representations. Mr Packwood said nothing had been finalised yet, and it is necessary for us to watch the position very carefully. A copy of our estimates has been sent to the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and to Mr J. G. Barclay.” “If the grants are as futile as they were last year, we may have to go to Wellington immediately,” commented Mr Aickin. “Are other Northern counties affected as we are?” asked Cr. Snelling. “I really can’t say,” answered the chairman. On the motion of Cr. Litlin, the chairman and staff were given permission to visit Wellington if the need for the trip arose.
