Check Your Shock Absorbers

Although shock absorbers play an important part in the safety of driving and economy of operation of automobiles. they seldom receive proper attention by the average motor owner. The shock absorbers on a car should be carefully inspected at least after every 5000 miles of driving, and checked over to see if all is 0.K., when the vehicle is raised from the ground for lubrication or maintenance work. A dead unit at either front or back of the car increases difficulty of steering control, in addition to allowing the vehicle to bounce when travelling over potholes and road inequalities.- - Front-wheel shimmy, one of the worst faults in a car. often results from a broken or inactive shock absorber. Skidding and undue tyre wear may also result from the same cause. A test which may give a clue to an ineffective shock absorber is to stand on the front or rear bumper while the car is on the ground. If the absorbers are inoperative, the car will bounce too easily and excessively after jumping off the bumper bar. Should any of these units be found dead, then the best course is to let your service house expert inspect the car.—“Dunlop Bulletin.”
