Hospital Subsidy Increase Sought
A Miggi'siii'M that a deputation representing , local bodies should wait upon the Minister of Health with the object of having the hospital subsidy increased was made by the Kairanga County Council in a circular letter re- : ceivetl at the Mangonui County Conn- ( . oil’s meeting on Wednesday. “The letter accords with my own ; views.” said the chairman. "If all i local bodies conferred they would ! have a chance of getting somewhere.” Cr. J. W. Hoskin suggested that ; some district with a large Maori population should receive special con- ; sideration. Those districts without I this problem were not sympathetic to- ; wards those who had to face it and j could not be expected to give much ; support. He favoured concerted acj lion by those districts with a large | Maori population. j The chairman: That matter can be j discussed at a conference before the I Minister is approached, j Cr. A. D. L. Shaw, favoured hospital j boards meeting the Minister as a I combined force but agreed with Cr. j Hoskin that separate action should ! also be taken on the Maori problem by the districts concerned. i On the motion of Cr. F. Holder the council decided to support both the proposals, the chairman being ap- , pointed to represent the council on the deputation to Wellington. Advice was received from the Mangonui Hospital Board that the levy on the county, for 1938-39 would be \ £3615 15s sd. A letter was also received from the Bay of Islands County Council seeking support to a proposal that the medical service to natives be met out of the consolidated fund. I
