Auckland-Awanui Direct Road Service
A new departure in Northland road transport facilities has resulted from the meeting of the No. 1 District Licensing Authority in Kaitaia this week. Messrs Hutley’s Motors Ltd,, for whom Mr R. Kelly, of Kaitaia, appeared, have been authorised to run a through service on Sundays only between Awanui and Auckland, leaving both terminals at 8 a.m. and arriving at their destinations about 6 p.m., in ample time for south-bound passengers to catch the Limited Express leaving Auckland in the evening. Numerous Refusals. Passenger services are already being run by Messrs Hutley’s Motors both ways between Auckland and Whangarei seven days a week, and also from the rail-head at Otiria to and from Awanui six days a week. Repeated applications for authority to connect these services have been made but have always been refused following strong objections by the Railway Department and operators on the route. At the sitting of the No. 1 Licensing Authority in Whangarei yesterday the Railway Department again objected to the granting of the application for a Sunday service, but, as trains do not run on the North lines on Sundays, the Authority. Mr. E. J. Phelan, did not sustain this objection. Among those giving evidence in favour of the through service being inaugurated were Mr. T. S. Houston, chairman of the Mangonui Hospital Board and a member of the Kaitaia Town Board. Mr. R. Kelly, of Kaitaia appeared on behalf of the applicant.
