An Ex-Major Charged

f Special to “Northern Advocate.’’! AUCKLAND, This Day. Five charges of indecent assault on boys fre-m 12 to 14 years of age were preferred against Stanley Henry Chapman, farmhand, aged 44, before Mr Justice Fair in the Supreme Court yesterday. Mr Noble appeared for the defence. The Crown Prosecutor, Mr V. R. Meredith, said the accused had been associated with a suburban church, where he was a Sunday School teacher. and leader of the Christian Endeavour. In a written statement, accused said he had been an inmate of the Avondale Mental Hospital after a breakdown, and also that he had been associated with boys’ welfare works for the past 28 years. Giving evidence on hi's own behalf, accused said he had been a major in the British army during the GreatWar. Evidence was given by the Rev. T. Halliday that accused was held in good esteem as a man of sterling character. The further hearing was adjourned until this morning.
