Form In The Bay

The sooner the back divisions in. all the senior Bay teams concentrate on correct formation, the sooner will they be able to develop attacking movements. The five-eighths particularly are at fault in most instances, coming up before the ball is clear of the scrum, with the result that they are standing flat-footed when they receive it from the half.

Weak tackling was Kawakawa’s downfall on Saturday, as was also their failure to go down on the ball to stop a rush. One exception in this respect was V. Dunlop, who has been going well this season behind the pack. The most interesting games in the Bay this year are those played by the third graders, and if the boys maintain the form they are displaying now, senior football will come into its own when the younger players are eligible. Probably the most premising of these are the two Smith boys. In the game played at Kaitaia recently these two boys scored 19 points for Kaikohe out of a total of 28. Johnny, the elder, scored four tries and converted one, while his younger brother, Peter, scored and converted one.

Another promising player is Bloomfield (Opua), who was outstanding in the recent seven-a-side tournament at Ohaeawai. Napia (Kaikohe) is also very premising. Other good third graders are B. Dalton (Kaikohe), Yorke, Wallace, Young, P. Williams, T. Dickcscn and J, Pou.
