On Winterless Grounds In Far North
Week after week matches are being played under perfect conditions, the playing fields, which in past seasons nave usually been a quagmire at this time of the year. Doing still in splendid order.
Awanui must have taken (he field with some misgivings, as the team was playing without the captain, W.
Cooper. T. Johnson, in the forwards, and the two star backs. J. Hanna and T. Ryder. T. Johnson has loft the district. This front-row forward has given some dashing displays recently and probably would have gained representative honours, The manner in which the younger members of Awanui’s team played is most encouraging. J. Spanakc. at fullback. was hi fine form, the way in which he tackled To Ifao to save a try being particularly worthy.. 5* V ;; N. Petera, who played in the junior curtain-raiser, filled a gap in the Awonui seniors, playing very well on the wing, * * » I. Wright was certainly unlucky on Saturday. Diving for a force-down, he had his ribs injured, and he will now be unable lo play for seme time. Ho has been one of the best wing three-quarters in the county this season. *• * * Another junior player, Te Maru, was one of Kaitaia E’s best forwards. One or two of his solo runs amused the crowd greatly, running straight at his opponents and knocking them over.
