£6 For Shooting Native Pigeon
“This offence is going on all over the North,” declared Mr G. N. Morris, S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when a Maori, Tom Hita, pleaded guilty to shooting a native pigeon. “However,” continued Mr Morris, “defendant has owned up to the offence, and I am prepared to consider this in fixing the penalty.” Defendant, for whom Mr Trimmer appeared, was fined £6, court costs amounting to 15/- and witnesses' expenses 11/-. Charges of pursuing native game without having a license were brought against Tom Hita, Kawe Tito, and Prince Keeta, but were withdrawn.
