Olympic Games Where?
(Received 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 15. If Japan’s decision to abandon the Olympic Games had been made last year, Britain probably would have applied to hold them, but now it. is felt that the time is overshort to enable proper organisation, states the' “Manchester Guardian.”'. Therefore; Finland will have British- support if she proceeds with her application.-U The International Olympic Commit" tec, however, does not meet :.until June, and it is not clear whether The* executive is empowered to decide without a full meeting. Moreover, Italy may advance a claim, presume ably with German support. •
Japan Saves Her Face. There is a growing feeling in Brk tain, the United States and Scandinavia that the Games have lost their original character and should be abandoned. The “Guardian” points out that, whether Japan’s excuses ..were genuine or not, she has saved -herself the humiliation, of the almost certain refusal of the British, American, French and Scandinavians to.:take part. The whole Olympic system may have been killed by the crisis. Japan has saved both the Olympic Games and her own dignity. It is felt in Britain that the Finnish presentation of the Games will be such as to restore the original sporto ing character, which was lost at Berlin. The Helsingfors correspondent of “The Times” says it is now accepted that Finland will be invited to arrange for the 1040 Olympiad. It is believed the International Council will ratify this decision without delay,' as the time for preparation is short. Experts agree that Finland will be able to arrange a good sporting Olympiad on classic lines without extra events. They consider July 10 as the best date, as August is rainy.
