(Received 10 a.m.) HANKOW, July 15. The People’s Political Council has issued an appeal to Chinese women not to use powder, rouge and lipstick, and to restrict their consumption of sweets. They are asked to devote the savings thus made to a special national reconstruction fund, which will be supplemented by special taxation on wines and cigarettes. The Premier, Mr Rung, has set an example by giving up his limousine and riding to his office in a rickshaw, escorted by two armed cyclists.
Carrying half a ton of freight, consisting of news-reels, photographs and newspapers dealing with Their Majesties’ visit to Paris, the pickaback plane Mercury will fly to Montreal and New York from Foynes, Ireland, on Wednesday. The Department of Overseas Trade announces that the British Government will officially participate in the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition of 1839-1940.
