J WOKE early yesterday morning to

smell the frost in the air. Cuddling down in the blankets, I thought ft was the loveliest thing in the world to have a nice warm bed. I took a scared and shivery peep out the window and saw a pale gold moon above the silent hills, and all the earth was white and cold. Then I tucked down /n bed, and was glad that I wasn’t the cow that I saw standing out in the middle of the paddock.

J LOVE making discoveries, and finding things that I never dreamed I had. Here is a poem I found tucked away in. one ol my cooks—(l don’t know who wrote it). f Because you stumbled yesterday when you were feeling low, And all your hopes were underneath a cloud. Because you thought success was far and that it came toe- slow, Resigned yourself to drifting with, the crowd. Because some sc-called friend forgot to stand beside you then. And left you standing all alone—assailed; Don’t think that all are traitors in this busy world of men. And don’t, believe that you yourself have failed For today is not yesterday; I lie world is not the same As ’(.was when you wore, feeling kind of blue; There’s a new life every morning, and a more exciting game Than a day or two ago you, ever knew. So greet the dawn of other suns, and breathe another air. And call a brighter lustre to the eye. For a new beginning’s (tilling and his step is on the stair— To bring you nut beneath a fairer sky. - * * *■ J-JASN’T this sun Am ie Peon glorious? One feels like basking in .it. And

the trees and grass and earth just simply revel in it after the frost. * * * | NEVER knew the Whangarei Falls were so beautiful. Last week 1 walked out there (and incidentally got caught in the rain coming back, which wasn’t too pleasant). It was a lovely walk, though, and well worth while when we reached there. The spray was rising high above the falls, in a misty film, and shining through it was a beautiful rainbow. We viewed the falling water from the top, and then proceeded to scramble down the slippery wooded slope to the bottom. * * ■* i* | FOUND Some maidenhair fern growing in the kink of a rock, so I carefully preserved it. I do hope it grows. Once I had some, and let water gather in the pot. and it killed the plant.

to got on with the Falls story; it was late afternoon when we reached the bottom, and if was dull and cold and exceedingly damp. However, we rnt on a log and ate oranges and cake, not bothering about, the cold when we were looking at the beautiful falls. I could have sat all day, watching the silver water cascade down over the rocks and find its way among the ferns and trees, down the hill, T'VE been putting up pictures. It’s such fun, and makes all the difference to a room, when one gets the right kind of pictures, f love these old-fashioned homes, where the walls are simply crammed with pictures of dull old ancestors or bcaulilul girls, pretty calendars that look tlm owner’s fancy, the baby of 50 years ago. plates from magazines, etc. They are always muddled up in amusing manner, but the room always seems cheery for it. and very homely
