Waterfront Inquiry Wanted
I Special to “Northern Advocate.'’] WELLINGTON, This Day. The opinion that an inquiry by a select committee into conditions on the waterfront is an immediate necessity, because present methods are increasing costs enormously, arc creating ill-will, and giving New Zealand an unenviable worldwide reputation, was expressed by the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at its annual conference. Mr E. R. Bird, of Kaitaia, said that the reports of the position were very conflicting. The waterside workers had been blamed for the increase m farmers’ costs, but it was apparent that there were two sides to the story. The president, Mr W. W. Mulholland, said that the union had been pressing for an inquiry for years. The speaker could not help feeling that for some reason or other the Ministers hands were being tied.
