Taranaki Flooding: Train Derailed
[per Press Association. Copyright.'] NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. A phenomenal downpour of rain in Taranaki in the early hours of Saturday resulted in a partial derailment of a goods train, severe erosion of road work on the main highway, and the collapse of about 90 yards of a stone retaining wall at the Central School. New Plymouth. The derailment occurred two miles north of Tariki. A culvert four feel square has, in the past, been adequate to carry floods in a small creek in the area. On Saturday, however, the creek swept over the embankment, washingcut the track ballast, and leaving several sleepers clear of their beds. A goods train from Wanganui was on the weakest stretch of line before the driver realised the danger. The engine swayed dangerously across the damaged section, and remained on the rails, but the two leading trucks jumped the rails, and two at the rear of the train followed. The trucks were damaged slightly, and the track was damaged for about 200 yards.
