Eyes On Czechoslovakia
(Received 8.30 a.m.) PRAGUE, June 11. On the eve of the final instalment of the municipal elections to be held tomorrow, Czechoslovakia’s legal experts worked all day and night trying to devise a new formula, whereby it is hoped to dovetail most of the Sudeten German demands into the Government’s minorities statute. The Government has agreed in principle to accept the Sudeten Germans’ memorandum of June 8 as a basis for discussion. The Government has appealed for voluntary contributions towards defence, and £2,000,000 has already been subscribed. A clash occurred between Czechs and Sudeten Germans at Warmdorf, which resulted in 47 Germans being arrested. One thousand others demonstrated, and the release of those arrested was eventually granted. The Parliamentary leaders of the Sudeten Germans have declined to advise their party’s participation in the Czechoslovak national defence loan.
