Footballers Taste Winter; ’Karamea Test Hikurangi

Rugby

pJVEN THEIR FIRST TASTE OF REALLY WINTRY CONDITIONS ON t* SATURDAY, WHANGAREI RUGBY FLAYERS STRUGGLED IN THE MUD WITH A GREASY BALL. RU GBY PARK, HITHERTO THIS SEASON, HAD BEEN IRREPROACHABLE, BUT, CHURNED UP BY THE STRAIN OF SEVEN-A-SIDE DAY, THE SURFACE WAS HEAVY, ALTHOUGH HARDLY SUFFICIENTLY SO TO EXCUSE THE VERY INDIFFERENT DISPLAY GIVEN BY OLD BOYS AND KAMO. It was a poor game relieved by some bright individual efforts, and Kamo were distinctly unfortunate to lose by such a large margin as 14 3. Neither team was at full strength. ’Karamea’ provided a surprise at Hikurangi when they gave the undefeated team a hard match. The game was played on a sodden field and the odds were about even throughout, although Hikurangi’s combination was obviously superior. Hikurangi won 11—6. The game, particularly in the second half, was marred by a number o f casualties, three Hikurangi men and one visitor being assisted from Lie field. Towai, appearing for the first time in six years, nearly lowered the Pipiwai colours in a hard-fought sen ior B curtain-raisei. Good football was witnessed in the four junior matches at the Park. High School and Waikickie having to fight particularly hard, for their wins.
