The first round of the Mangonui Rugby Union's senior championship for the Bell Shield concluded on Saturday. under boisterous conditions. Awanui and Ahipara were successful in their matches and both remain level in the leading position. Houhora, continuing their improved form from the previous week, rather surprised by defeating Kaitaia A. In the junior section, Ahipara suffered their first defeat, going down to Te Kao. which will make this competition more interesting. Results were: — Senior. —Ahipara 8, Te Kao 3; Awanui 12, Kaitaia B 0: Houhora 11. Kaitaia A 9. Junior.—Te Kao 11. Ahipara 8: Herekino 6. Kaitaia 3: Kaitaia Old Boys 3. Houhora 3.
