ANTI-FLOODING BRIDGE AT WHAKAPARA

As a. first and most important part of flood alleviation on the main Northem Highway, the construction of a new bridge just north of Whakapara level crossing has been commenced. Previously the structure at this point was quite inadequate to carry flood waters, and was less than half the length of the railway bridge alongside. This caused a bottle neck and the banking of water, causing frequent flooding of the main highway.

The new two-way concrete structure will be slightly longer than the railway bridge and of much enhanced flood carrying capacity.

A public works survey party has been operating in the district with a view to collecting information regarding diverting some portions of road and raising others to prevent flooding on this section of the highway.
