In a review of holiday traffic, the IV. mister of Transport, the Hon, R. Semple, stated that, in spite of the record traffic, there were evidently fewer persons injured in traffic accidents these holidays than during the previous year’s period.

There were more fatalities, however, seventeen being killed, a? / compared with nine in the 1936-37 holiday period. He attributed this to the increased power and greater speed. Only Three on Trunk Roads, Only, three out of the 17 fatalities had occurred on the trunk roads, which carried the greater volume of traffic, he said. Two of these were through misadventure, rather than recklessness or lack of courtesy. Considerable improvement in the standard of driving on main highways had been reported by traffic officers, he continued.

It was to be regretted, however, that motorists did not exercise the same care when they left the main highways. Away from the trunk roads too many motorists drove at excessive speed.
