GOOD CROWD ON RUSSELL 'EXCURSION
The railway excursion to Opua and Russell yesterday was well patronised, and there would have undoubtedly been more people making the trip had the weather appeared more promising. When the special left Maungaturoto at 7 a.m., there were 30 excursionists on board. The complement was augmented en'route when the train pulled out of Whangarei shortly after 9 a.ra., and, 160 were looking forward to an enjoyable day. At Hikurangi and Otiria, two aud four carriages were added, and when the train arrived at Opua, 470 passengers disembarked. Fine weather was enjoyed throughout the journey, and although many people expected the launch trip across the bay would prove to be rather rough, the sea was exceptionally calm. The return trip started at 5.45 p.m., and Whangarei was reached at 8.40, the train continuing to Maungaturoto.
