Carpenters Oppose Adult Trainee Plan
rvvedal To. “Northern Advocate”! CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
Strong opposition to the Government’s adult trainee scheme is being expressed throughout the country by carpenters’ and joiners’ organisations. permits for these trainees are not being sanctioned by local apprenticeship committees, because the trade union representatives on these committees feel that the trainee system is only a method of introducing un-der-rate workers, and will result in the diluting of the trade. Even permits for adult apprenticeships are being granted under protest, the union’s desire being to avoid any accusation that they are not cooperating with the Government in its endeavour to replace in industry the youths who have been prevented, by economic circumstances, from previously entering the building trade.
