The “ Advocate Up-To-Date

WHEN readers peruse tonight’s issue of the “Northern Advocate” they will notice a difference in the presentation of the Leader Page, a difference which, we hope, will meet with appreciation and approval. The 'alterations have been planned with much thought and reseach, the sole obiect being to afford a neater newspaper and one which will be more easily read. The display of news and ideas in an acceptable form designed so that the type may be scanned with the greatest possible facility, is, after all, the ultimate aim of the typographer ’s art. Although the literary standard of New Zealand newspapers is never in question—we have It on the best authority ot overseas experts that it is among the highest in the worldmany of our journals neglect the art of make-up., with the result that they are difficult to read and are hard on the eyes. Each newspaper has its own way of ra aking-up its paper, a pattern m most instances handed down through the years; each striving for a certain effect of its own. It is with the object of correcting such obvious weaknesses in display that the “Northern Advocate” is embarking upon its present policy. Readers have to be drawn into a paper as they are into an advertisement; few of them any longer go through a newspaper as a habit or merely to idle away an hour or so. There are too many diversions demanding their time and attention. We firmly believe that the reading public as a whole is not insensible to the little niceties of appearance and tidiness that make the difference between a poorly arranged, uncouth looking paper and one that is as inviting as an open gate to a cool garden. The “Northern Advocate” has not been heh d hand in advocating progress—hotli material and aesthetic—or Northland; it is in conformity with that P oll «y tlle changes have been adopted in the lay-out ot Northland. p P •
