“Prisoner Of Zenda,” At Plaza Theatre
A very fine programme is at present billed at the Plaza Theatre, the main feature being the picturised version of Anthony Hope’s famous “The Prisoner of Zenda.” This fast-mcving story has as its principals Ronald Coleman, Madeleine Carroll and Douglas Fairbanks, junior. all of whom are splendid in the roles assigned to them. Coleman appears in a dual role, that of an Englishman who impersonates the king, and that of the prisoner of Zenda. The story deals with intrigue in a European Court; the kidnapping of the king on the eve of his coronation and the substituting of the Englishman to go through with the ceremony. Then follow more intrigue and adventure as the one faction endeavours to keep the rightful king oft' the throne, and the acting-monarch and his party try to I’estore him.
There is also the love story between the Englishman and the princess who is to marry the king. That was the one possibility the plotters overlooked. The film is one of those rare few which parts the lovers in the end. But i it could afford to do so, for even without the love interest it would be a T fine film. i
Ihe supporting programme is also excellent.
