AMATEUR CYCLING CHAMP. The national amateur cycling championship and Empire Games trials were opened at the English Park Stadium, Christchurch. last night. Results: — 1000 metres time trial.—Giles (Canterbury), Imin 17 l-ssec; Roe (Wellington!. 1.17 3-5; Ulmer (Wellington), 1,18 2-5. Teams championship.—First heat, Auckland beat Canterbury; second heat, Wellington beat Otago. The meeting was continued today. CANTERBURY IN STRONG POSITION.

After many keenly-fought matches, Canterbury gained a lead of four rubbers to two against Wellington in both the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield and the Kathleen Nunnerley Casket contests at Wilding Park yesterday. Canterbury is defending the trophies for the fourth successive year, and is thus in a fairly strong position for the final matches this afternoon. AUCKLANDERS ON TOP. Auckland players dominated the position in all events after the conclusion of the second day’s play in the Nofih Island; Tennis championships at New Plymouth. In the <singles events, Auckland had seven out of the eight quarter-finalists.
